Dairy Quality Assurance Program PDHGA

Raising Quality Replacement Heifers—Growing Your Profits

Dairy operators have asked for information to review their replacement heifer practices on their dairies or to review the practices used on farms that raise their replacement heifers. The Raising Quality Replacement Heifers—Growing Your Profits is designed to help you ask the right questions of yourself and your herd health veterinarian, nutritionist, or other dairy consultant. Defining and implementing an effective heifer replacement program for your dairy will lead to higher profits. We define a quality replacement heifer as a heifer that produces a strong healthy calf at 24 months.

Some producers may work through these short checklists with their dairy consultant. Others may go through them with their staff and then discuss certain best management practices with their dairy consultant. This audit of Best Management Practices (BMPs) does not imply you should do all of the BMPs. This listing is provided to spark consultation and discussion. The results—more profit for your dairy from implementing a quality replacement heifer program as part of a total management plan.

All of the Dairy Care manuals can be purchased from the DQA Center's on-line catalog.
